On Thursday 4th June 2015, Aysgarth School launched its annual Inter School ‘Maths Challenge’ competition for pupils in Year 3 and 4 (7-9 year olds).
Neighbouring schools were invited to enter teams of 8 children (ideally an equal mix of Year 3 and 4 pupils) to take part in a series of activities including relays, puzzles and maths crunches.
Susie Drake, Head of Pre-Prep at Aysgarth School said:
“The main aim of the competition was to have fun and inspire mathematical thinking not just in our own pupils but also those in other schools. We were delighted the other schools wanted to be involved and we are thrilled they are keen to come again next year!"
The event was held in Aysgarth School’s newly renovated Reynolds Hall, a designated Performing Arts Centre with a well equipped stage and lighting.
The closely fought contest came down to the wire but in the end first place was awarded to Masham, second place Aysgarth and third a mixed Queen Mary's/Aysgarth team.
One of the main organisers, Jo MacLelland, Director of Performing Arts and IT at Aysgarth School said:
“We tried to design a competition that involved a good variety of questions that encouraged flexible thinking, mental agility and problem solving. We hope the pupils enjoyed the cryptic nature of the challenges. Massive congratulations to Masham for their win and pipping us to the post!"
