Early Years at Oak House provides a happy, busy environment, where the individuality of every child is recognised, and all children are encouraged and supported to make progress in their own way and in their own time. The Nursery and Reception classes have adjacent classrooms and share a safe, enclosed garden which can be accessed from both rooms. We also make regular use of the wider school grounds, including the walled 'Mr McGregor's' garden and the woodland areas.
Our Nursery provides a smooth, happy transition from home to school life. We welcome children from the term of their third birthday and suggest a minimum of three morning sessions initially. All staff are qualified and experienced in the care of young children, and we work within a ratio of 1:8. We aim to develop a productive home/school relationship and value a close partnership with parents.
Nursery and Reception classes work very closely together so the move to the Reception class is happy and straightforward. Reception takes children through the academic year in which they have their fifth birthday, and they attend full time.
All the children in the Early Years cover the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, where the different areas of learning are taught holistically through themes of interest to the children, and naturally follow the seasons of the year. We understand that children learn most effectively through a mixture of self-initiated experiences and adult-planned instruction. The children are, therefore, given daily opportunities to explore and investigate in free play situations alongside their more formal teaching, which includes phonics for reading and writing, and daily number activities.
Both Early Years classes have music and swimming taught by specialist teachers, and French is also introduced from Reception.
