Music Staff

Matthew Atherton - Director of Music, Form Tutor, Teacher of Organ and Piano

MA (Durham), FTCL, ATCL.


Matthew started teaching at Aysgarth School in January 2013 having been the Organist, Assistant Director of Music and Director of Prep School Music at Barnard Castle School since 2005.

Matthew studied organ with Ian Little at Ampleforth College and James Lancelot and Keith Wright at Durham Cathedral. He holds an MA in Musicology from Durham University and is a Fellow of Trinity College of Music.

Matthew’s eclectic repertoire is well known and at Aysgarth the boys (and staff) enjoy hearing 007, The Simpsons and other delights being performed by Matthew on the organ and piano in chapel services and assemblies.

R. Sowden - Assistant Director of Music & Brass


Richard specialised in trumpet performance at Huddersfield Polytechnic before going on to complete a post graduate teaching degree at Huddersfield University. Further music studies include an MA from the University of York, with research into developments in instrumental music education. Richard works as an orchestral trumpet player throughout the North of England and has taught instrumental music for the Ministry of Defence and the North Yorkshire County Music Service. Richard is also a trustee of the St Cecilia Orchestra, noted for its performances of large scale orchestral works at Ripon Cathedral.



Dominic Rivron - Teacher of Guitar, 'Cello, Piano and Double Bass

Mus.B Hons (Manchester)

Dominic has a Mus.B(Hons) degree. He graduated from Manchester University in 1979, where he studied composition with the composer Geoffrey Poole. For the past twenty years he has lived in the Yorkshire Dales where he works as an instrumental teacher, teaching piano, cello, guitar and double-bass. 

In his spare time he enjoys running and hill-walking. .



Martin Bainbridge - Teacher of Violin, Viola and Pre-Prep Strings




Martin was a Junior at the Royal Academy from the age of 11. He then studied with renowned musician Sascha Lasserson for six years before entering the London orchestral scene. He played in the LPO and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, as well as freelancing, before moving north to establish his own teaching practice.

Peter Bartlett - Teacher of Woodwind, Director of the Butterworth Ensemble & Clarinet Ensemble




Peter studied music at the Royal Military School of Music. He played professionally in Japan and the Middle East, doing mainly radio and television studio work. Aysgarth is one of seven schools that Peter teaches at. He plays all the woodwind instruments and has played in a number of local orchestras. He recently completed an Advanced Diploma in Jazz Studies at St Andrews University.



Tom Alexander - Teacher of Bagpipes


Tom started piping at the age of 9. He joined the Scouts and played in their pipe band for 6 years. He is now a member of Thirsk Fire Station Pipe Band which was started in 2009.

Stephen Carter - Teacher of Singing and Piano

BA Hons (Oxon)

Stephen has been teaching singing at Aysgarth since 2009. Previously he had been the singing tutor at Bradford University and had also taught privately. He is very keen to help the boys realise their potential as singers.

Stephen started singing as a boy chorister at Durham Cathedral Choir, where he became Head Chorister, and subsequently as a Choral Scholar at Christ Church Oxford. Since graduating he has worked as a professional freelance Counter-tenor, touring extensively with the foremost 'early' music groups, notably The King's Consort, The Tallis Scholars, The Gabrieli Consort and The Sixteen.

In his spare time Stephen is a keen runner and his other passion is astronomy, to the extent of going back to school recently to take his GCSE (he got an A*!). Stephen lives with his wife, a primary school teacher and his three children in West Yorkshire.

Evelyn Wilson - Teacher of Piano and Pre-Prep Music Teacher



After studying piano and singing at the Royal Manchester College of Music, Evelyn took a PGCE at Manchester University before starting a career in teaching music. She has taught in Primary and Secondary schools, as well as becoming a Head of Music at a Comprehensive School before joining Aysgarth.

Evelyn has always loved teaching piano to individual pupils and playing for choirs. She is married to a musician and has two sons who both trained as musicians and now follow a musical career. During her spare time she enjoys playing music with her husband and adores crossword puzzles.
