About Aysgarth | Academic

Ambitious, knowledgeable and curious.

The focus of the Aysgarth curriculum is the building of firm academic foundations and the encouragement of intellectual curiosity. We prepare boys to take Common Entrance or scholarships to a wide range of public schools. We have a very successful track record of sending boys to Eton, Harrow, Radley, Shrewsbury, Stowe, Uppingham and Winchester, as well as Ampleforth and Sedbergh in the north. We advise parents on which schools would suit their son.

The curriculum is broad and we group boys by ability to enable them to develop at the appropriate rate. Boys are taught by subject specialists after the first year and class sizes are small – typically 10-12. We teach Latin to most boys and there is an annual trip to France in the boys’ fourth year. Our learning support team assists those with learning difficulties across the ability range. The form tutor maintains an overview of the academic progress of boys in their form.

"A pupil from whom nothing is ever demanded which he cannot do, never does all he can"
John Stuart Mill

Classrooms have multi-media equipment and internet links, as well as a complete range of more traditional teaching equipment. The computer suite is available for all subjects as well as for teaching IT. Assessment is regular, and the school database enables us to monitor each boy’s progress carefully so that he is developing to his potential.
