Stuart Smith - Head of Art/CDT

Stuart is married with two young daughters. His interests are running, fell walking, mountain biking, reading and wargaming.

Caroline Goddard
Montessori Diploma and Hornsby (SPLD)
Caroline is married to Anthony and is involved in the pastoral side of the school as well as teaching Religious Studies and Craft Design Technology to the younger boys. She enjoys the weekends at school best because of the relaxed, family atmosphere when the staff and boys enjoy all kinds of extra-curricular activities. This might be gardening with just a few, picking blackberries and making crumble or joining in the water slide, (although this can be rather painful the next day!)
Caroline does regular dormitory duties, liaises with Mums over various motherly issues, runs the school uniform shop, makes the costumes for the plays and, on Friday evenings, runs the Airfix club. She also oversees the redecorating of the school and sees it as her mission to make the place more homely!
Anthony and Caroline have 3 grown up children, 2 dogs and an ancient cat.

Victoria Martin - Head of English
Mrs Martin has a Masters degree in English Literature from Cardiff University. She also has a PGCE in Secondary School English from York University.
Mrs Martin loves reading (Shakespeare, detective stories, A.S Byatt!), visiting the theatre and cooking. In addition, she loves to take in the archaeological sites in Greece, having a keen interest in Classical Studies.

Pauline Redding - Head of Drama
Cert. Ed Southampton University
Mrs. Redding joined Aysgarth in September. She is married with 2 children and has been living in Yorkshire for 6 years.
Mrs. Redding has a variety of interests including horse riding, photography (weddings, christenings, birthdays, etc.) and loves the theatre. She is working hard at producing a variety of plays.

Ben Wicling
BA Hon Durham.
Ben is very sporting, having played football and cricket at high level. He coached the Malawi national cricket team in the 2004 World Cup qualifier and also worked with the national team of Lesotho. In addition, Ben has managed the Durham county under 14 side.
He is married to Jacky and they have a young daughter.

Anthony Goddard
M.A.
Anthony is married to Caroline and has 2 daughters and 1 son, all older than 20! Anthony teaches geography, takes games and is fully involved in the pastoral side of the school. He also teaches bridge and croquet.
Anthony’s other interests are, of course, his family, tennis, sailing, golf, walking, shooting and reading and he is an ardent Tottenham Hotspur supporter! Before taking on his role at Aysgarth, he worked for Accenture and ICI plc.

Ted Haslam - Geography teacher
Originally from Australia, Ted is married to Christine and has two sons. He first taught at Aysgarth many years ago and has recently retired after 20 years as Headmaster at Barnard Castle Preparatory School.
He has a keen interest in sport, playing for the Crakehall Cricket Club and is an ardent supporter of Derby County and the Melbourne Football Club.

Philip Southall - Assistant Headmaster and Head of History
B.A.(Hons.), P.G.C.E.
Philip is married with three boys, Ben and William are at Uppingham, and Ned is at Aysgarth.
Philip teaches history, is the 1st team soccer coach, 2nd team rugby coach and coaches 1st team tennis. He is a VERY keen Middlesborough F.C. supporter. His interests are of course sports, especially football and rugby, squash, tennis, fishing and shooting.

Ben is very sporting, having played football and cricket at high level. Cricket in the North east premier League. He also coached the Malawi national cricket team in the 2004 World Cup qualifier. Ben worked with Durham county under 14 for the past 2 years.

Gordon MacLelland - Director of Sport
B.A.(Hons) University College Chester, QTS, University of Lancaster.
Gordon joined the staff in September 2007. He is married to Jo (Director of Academic Communications) and they live in Bank Top with their son Archie. Gordon has a number of interests, including travelling, growing vegetables, livestock, wine, fine dining and cooking. The particular areas of sport that he enjoys are Rugby Union(he previously coached Sedbergh School 1st XV, was Head Coach of Penrith RUFC and is currently coach of the North/Midlands Prep Schools Barbarians team), Soccer (ardent Liverpool and Carlisle United supporter), Cricket, Golf, Tennis, Squash and Running.

Johan Welsh - Head of Skills Development
Johan has the following qualifications: BA (Hons.) from Nottingham University, P.G.C.E. from London University, Institute of Education and R.S.A. Cert. S.P.L difficulties.
Johan lives in Yorkshire and is married with three grown up children. Her main interests are walking and trekking, travelling, cycling, swimming, yoga as well as Batik and Art.
Johan leads a very strong Skills Development department which includes brain gym to help improve balance, co-ordination and motivation for learning.

Vincent Irwin - Maths Learning Support
BSc Ed (Hons) Durham University, BA (Hons) Teesside University, QTS
Vincent is married, he has two young daughters and he lives in Newton le Willows. His interests include living the good life, he once ran a smallholding, raising and eating his livestock. He also enjoys shooting and fly fishing and is a member of Felling Fly Fishing Club. He has represented Crakehall and Middlesbrough at cricket and rugby respectively. Alongside these pastimes he is an award winning gardener, growing exhibition leeks for show, both locally and nationally.

Alison Gaven

Alison is married to Peter and they have two children, Nicholas and Catherine. Nicholas is at Barnard Castle and Catherine at Queen Marys.
She and her family have been at Aysgarth for10 years, having moved to England from South Africa.
Her job includes running the library, doing duties in the pre-prep and teaching the swimming, both in the pre-prep and in the main school.
Her interests are spending time with her family, walking, gardening, going to the gym and reading.

Jo is married to Gordon who is Director of Sport. They have recently had a son Archie and they live at Bank Top.
Jo's interests include food and wine, growing vegetables, entertaining, tennis and squash.

Tim Bullas - Head of Maths
M.A. (Hons.) St.Andrews University, P.G.C.E. Roehampton University
Tim grew up in Sheffield and was educated at Rugby School. He is married to Rebecca and they have two young girls.
His interests are squash, ski-ing and football, he is a life-long Sheffield Wednesday fan. He also enjoys country pursuits, most notably ferreting with his team of three, highly effective, ferrets.

Kate di Costanzo - Head of Classics
Kate is teaching Latin, history and English at Aysgarth. She has an honours degree from Durham University and was an editor and writer of children's books before training as a teacher in 2001. She and her husband Jerome moved to Aysgarth from London in the summer of 2008 and live at West Lodge. She loves books, the countryside, walking, fine food and wine, classical music and art.

Catherine Pearson - Head of French
MD, PGCE (York University)
Catherine is French, born in Paris - but has been living in North Yorkshire for 28 years. She is married and has two sons and one daughter, all supporters of the French rugby team. Formerly a doctor, Catherine became a teacher eight years ago and has never regretted the change!

Charlotte Rich
B.A (hons.) and PGCE Trinity and All Saints College
Charlotte has two children, Luke and Isabelle, who keep her on her toes. She is a fitness fanatic who regularly attends fitness classes, runs and cycles. Other interests include reading, music, gardening and dress making.

Paul Barlow - Head of RS & Housemaster
Mr Barlow came to Aysgarth from Ardingly College. He has a B. Ed (hons) degree from Bedford University.
Paul is married to Emma, who teaches in the Pre-Prep. They have three children, Ewan, Teddy and Poppy Louise.
Paul’s interests include camping/outdoor activities and travelling with his family.
When asked whether he wanted to say anything else, his quote was “I love being a DAD!”
Paul recently took on the post of Housemaster.

Caroline Goddard

Caroline is married to Anthony and they have 3 children, Chloe, Henrietta and Sam , who is an OA. She has a dog called Zimba and a cat, Hamlet.
Caroline is a surrogate mother to all the boys and teaches RS and Design Technology. She does many things around the school including running the uniform shop, being pastoral co-ordinator for the 1st and 2nd forms. She liases with Mums, helps in the dormitories on several nights during the week. Caroline also oversees the redecorating and refurbishment in the school. She is responsible for the costumes for plays and runs the gardening and airfix clubs.
Her interests are anything that requires her to use her hands. She loves gardening, sewing, upholstery and of course AIRFIX! She enjoys sailing, reading, walking and her new hobby is riding, on her days off. Caroline says she enjoys doing all these with her family or with the boys. She is also an ardent Chelsea supporter!

Peter Gaven - Information and Technology Manager and Head of PSHE
Peter has a B.Sc (hons) degree and a PGDE from The University of Natal (Durban)
Peter enjoys all types of music (particularly Christian and Gospel), woodwork, gardening and outdoor life. Peter is South African and has been teaching at Aysgarth since 1998. His sporting interests include rugby and water polo

Ed Canning - Director of Studies and Head of Science
Dr Canning was awarded his PhD. by the University of Leeds and has a PGCE from Canterbury,
Ed teaches Science and is a Form 3 tutor. He lives on site with his wife Hazel and family of three delightful children, Josephine, Harry and Oscar. The family would not be complete without mentioning Zanzi, their Rhodesian Ridgeback. Ed is a keen outdoorsman and has just taken up archery.
