Aysgarth 1st XI reach final of Caldicott 20/20 Festival

The 1st XI produced an excellent couple of days of cricket at the Caldicott 20/20 festival to reach the final.

Tour report

This years tour to Caldicott was a massive success. The 20/20 tournament was very well organised and many thanks must go to the Caldicott staff for all their help and assistance. The pitches and entertainment was excellent.

We started the first game against a touring side from South Africa, Clifton. They had won 7 and drawn 1 on their tour up to that point. We took the field with a little apprehension and it showed with our first over which was slightly erratic. However , from that point we were absolutely fantastic bowling with precision and fielder with real class. We finally bowled them out for 140 which was a superb performance on a very nice wicket.

In reply we were on 48-0 after the 6 over power play. Darbishire (18) and Adair (35) got us off to a great start but the wickets soon tumbled and we were left requiring 30 off the last 3 overs, with only 5 wickets remaining. Lusty blows for 6 from Wright and Bateson kept us in the hunt but it was captain marvel, Ned Hillsborough (19no), who scored a 4 off the penultimate ball to win the game. It was a fantastic result and really set up the weekend.

Our second match was not as close. We bowled Horris Hill out for 101 with a very strong bowling performance. Smith, Fenwick and Bateson bowled well again and along with Jones put them under plenty of pressure.

Our batting line up did well with Fawcett and Adair starring. We knocked off the total within 10 overs, and with Caldicott beating Clifton, we made the final.

After a long night pondering tactics we arose on Monday morning ready for action. We bowled and fielded well again and held them to competitive 154. In response, we started reasonably brightly at 34-1. However, 4 run outs in 2 overs led to a dreadful collapse which we were unable to recover from. We ended up on 80 all out with thoughts about what could have been.

Troy Lockyear won the tournament fielder prize and Rupert Smith won our teams bowling award. Congratulations must go to all the boys as we performed to a very impressive level.
