Philosophy in Motion

Form 4 enjoyed a truly thought-provoking enrichment session this week, delivered by Dr Beth MacIntosh from Catalyst, Winchester College.

The session encouraged pupils to challenge preconceived ideas about what philosophy looks like, beginning with a compelling overview of what philosophy is, why we think, and how philosophical questions underpin so much of the world around us.

Beth then led a masterclass introducing key philosophical thinkers before guiding pupils through a series of challenging ethical debates. From genetic testing to red blood cell doping in sport, pupils were invited to take a position — moving to different sides of the library to reflect whether they were unconcerned, slightly concerned, quite concerned, or extremely concerned.

It was an engaging, dynamic session that encouraged listening, reflecting, deciding, and debating — all with the support of ideas from philosophers past and present.
