Aysgarth Celebrates a Spectacular First Girls’ Hockey Season

The first-ever girls’ hockey season at Aysgarth has been a whirlwind of excitement, progress, and camaraderie. With daily practices, thrilling matches, and enthusiastic players, this debut season has laid a strong foundation for the future of girls’ hockey at the school.

For Imogen, the transition to Aysgarth’s rigorous hockey schedule was a game-changer:

"At my old school, hockey was only on Mondays, but now we practise every day, with two sessions on Tuesdays! My favourite part of the season was when we played a mini-goals game at Durham University and got flapjacks as a reward. Having an international player join us was really inspiring. I’m especially looking forward to indoor hockey—it’s quicker and more intense, plus you can’t lift your stick, which makes it more challenging!"

The U9 team also had a standout season, with players demonstrating impressive progress.

For Henny, the daily hockey schedule and Aysgarth's coaching have been transformative:

"At my old school, we only played twice a week, but now we do hockey every day! I’m also the captain of the U12 Thirsk team, and we’re currently 4th in the Yorkshire A League. One highlight this season was beating Ampleforth after losing to them last time. Everyone at Aysgarth gives their best, and it’s so much fun! Oh, and I was 4th in the whole year in the bleep test!"

Venetia has embraced the unique environment at Aysgarth:

"At my old school, we played lots of matches, but I absolutely love Mr. Barlow and the other sports teachers here. Even though our Astro is smaller, it’s great fun, and I’ve improved so much since coming to Aysgarth. Indoor hockey is different, but I think it will help my outdoor game. This season has been fantastic—we’ve only lost one match!"

For Bella, playing up for the U11s has been a highlight:

"I love that hockey is a team sport—it’s so much fun. I mostly play centre mid or sweeper, and Mr. Barlow is an amazing coach. He makes every session fun while ensuring we’re learning. One memorable moment was when AB knocked over Venetia and the goalie, causing a hilarious human domino effect! I’m excited about indoor hockey and how it can improve our outdoor skills, especially flicks."

To give our girls even more opportunities to play and train, we’ve introduced a Tuesday evening activity at Thirsk Hockey Club, where Mr. Barlow is a coach. This is not only a fantastic chance to sharpen their skills but also to make friends beyond school and compete at a higher than school level.

Their hard work is paying off! Henny is proudly captaining the U12 team, while Bella leads the U10s, with both teams competing in the Yorkshire A-League.

The girls’ hard work and enthusiasm have made this season unforgettable. With indoor hockey on the horizon, Aysgarth’s players are excited to build on their success, refining their skills and strengthening their love for the sport.

Here’s to the start of a brilliant legacy for girls’ hockey at Aysgarth!
