Our pupils sat exams in piano, clarinet, saxophone, and singing, and their hard work, dedicated practice were evident in the results, with an impressive 85% of our boys and girls achieving Merit and Distinction.
ABRSM offers two routes: the traditional graded exams and the performance grades. The performance pathway allows pupils to record four pieces back-to-back and submit them digitally, which is a brilliant option for those who feel more comfortable without an examiner in the room, but no less challenging. Both routes are designed to help young musicians progress in the way that suits them best.
Music at Aysgarth is wonderfully varied and energetic. This term alone, pupils have been playing accordion, piano, cello, flute, harp, clarinet, trumpet, bagpipes, double bass, guitar, cornet, violin, percussion and music theory. Whole-class instrument teaching of keyboards, brass and woodwind begins in PP2, giving every pupil the chance to explore music from an early age.
Performance is at the heart of school life. Pupils regularly take part in year group concerts, Pre-Prep assemblies, theatrical productions, Christmas Dinner performances and cheerful busking. Our termly Music Challenge brings everyone together, with each musician learning a part at their level so the whole group can perform as one and, most importantly, enjoy it. This term’s challenge is the James Bond theme.
With timetabled practice sessions with teacher support for scales and those tricky passages, every step of the musical journey is designed to build confidence, enjoyment and progress. These excellent ABRSM results showcase the talent, enthusiasm, and vibrant musical culture that continues to thrive at Aysgarth.
